A while back, we bought a small mp3 player. I also bought a small fm-transmitter. The theory was that we'd be able to play it in the car on the way to and from our walks. The reality was, there was lots of buzz, crackle, and hiss. I thought it was due to the power lines but, when we took the set-up to Arizona for the spring-training pilgrimage, even in the middle of a hundred miles of nowhere, we still got buzz, crackle, and hiss. We gave the transmitter to a friend driving across the country, with suitable caveats.
I was in the Family Dollar looking for something else a few days later, & happened to see cassette player adapters for $5. Although it's a 2004 model, our Corolla still has a cassette player. I think you can hear where this is going. For $5, we're able to play the mp3 player over the car stereo with no buzz or hiss at all. There're no worries about cds melting, cassettes getting eaten, etc. Great sound & awesome music, for the win!
