Remember me mentioning Himself's midlife crisis a while back? Well, just in case it wasn't here [good--or at least amusing--gossip never loses value from being repeated lots of different places], Himself's idea of a midlife crisis was upgrading the satellite to the baseball package. Most nights there are as many as 15 baseball games on, most at the same time. The comment "I'm getting baseballed out" has been heard in the house, along with assorted other astonishments.
The package included the tivo. Instead of only being able to record one channel at the time, we can now record up to two, & still watch something previously recorded. It is much more efficient. In fact, we hardly ever watch tv commercials any more; it's much more efficient to watch shows taped the night before while taping shows for the next night [you can watch 3 hours of tv in just over 2 hours that way].
All of which means our whole viewing dynamic has changed. There used to be whole nights when one or the other of us would take over the tv, because his or my shows were on then, leaving the other person in a sort of limbo, exiled to the computer or other reading medium. Now we spend the nights together, watching "our" shows together. I watch "my" shows during the day, & Himself watches "his" shows mornings or weekends.
The only thing is, when taping two channels at the time, they're both locked in place, & the male in the house has the channel-flipping compulsion [especially w/15 games all on at once ;)]. I usually try to arrange the taping, so only one thing at the time is recording, leaving the other channel open for him to frolic. While he's flipping around, I can be on LJ, or calling folks [free long distance is fun!], etc. Yay for shows on cable that repeat a lot; we likes optionss, my precioussessess.
It could truthfully be said that tivo has strengthened our marriage. The time we spend together, we're both engaged and involved [usually in saying rude things to twits on tv, but still]. Plus, there're much fewer worries about missing things when going out of town--like for Balticon! Yay!
Of course, most of the shows we watch either going away [like Angel--waahh!] or having season finales before Balticon also works out rather conveniently. Now we can concentrate on planning for & enjoying the trip.
