A friend sent me a lovely e-card and wish this morning. The art reminded me a bit of Marguerite de Angeli's _Door In The Wall_ [which won the Newbery]. I highly recommend all her books. The music reminded me of "Julian Of Norwich" by Sydney Carter [who wrote "Lord Of The Dance"]: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=julian+of+norwich+sydney+carter+ The hope is appropriate for the day.

Happy New Year, one and all!

Ever since high school, when I gave blood for the first time on a forged permission slip, giving blood has been important to me. After becoming diabetic a couple of years ago, I waited a year to stabilize, before giving blood again. I gave blood 3 times in the last year, each time with a bad reaction. The last time was especially bad, in spite of all my precautions [hitting Waffle House several hours before the appointment, etc.]. On the up side, my hemoglobin that day was 14.5!

Yet, just two months later [November], when I went to donate again, my number was only 12.1. I exclaimed, "Hormones!" [in the same tone in which Cordelia imprecates, "Barrayarans!"] Early this afternoon, during lunch, I got an email about a blood drive today. In spite of the short notice, I was able to get a good lunch, make an appointment, and go give blood. In spite of previous experience, this time things went well. My blood pressure was low, 112/68 with a pulse of 78. Best of all, the hemoglobin was 13.5, much more the thing.

So now, after 3 bad reactions, I've had one donation with no problems. Hopefully, this trend will continue.

Wow, that's a lot; talk about "en masse!" That may well have been my reading-est month this year. No surprise; since I didn't go to spring training with ze spouse, that was 10 days of uninterrupted reading time. It looks like I binged on Mark Reads Patreon videos and M.C.A. Hogarth. I got her _Spots_ novel in an e-book bundle. It was such compelling reading, I spent the whole day reading it on the desktop and then ordered the print edition. Fun!

Purchase

So, among other errands [mailing All The Things, the drugstore, the library], I hit the local Value Village on the way home. They've recently lowered their cds to .25 [yay!], but the cd cases are often empty [boo!]. {I don't get that; if you're stealing the cd, why not take the case as well? It doesn't take up much more space, & is much more sellable or tradeable.}

No joy in book- or cd-ville, but I lucked out on the t-shirt rack. I found a blood donor shirt. It's admittedly white with a garish design, but it's new, my size & was only 1.69. Major win! I gave blood at the end of August, so I've definitely earned it. Now I have a shortsleeve, as well as a longsleeve donation shirt.

[One of the highlights of Conflikt this year was when I wore my longsleeve shirt to dinner, & Kanef showed up in the exact same shirt. Normally, he's a bit hard to talk to, but we had a nice conversation about keeping one's hemoglobin up.] Best of all, I'm not eligible to give again until the end of October, well after OVFF. Another win!

What fun purchases have y'all had lately?

Marc Gunn, aka the Celtfather, one of the hardest-working musicians I know, who promotes other bands as much as [if not more than] his own, has released a free [set your own price] compilation over on bandcamp. It's a great sampler of his range of style and subject-matter.

This month by women authors. The full bundle is 10 [actually 13, as the Vonda McIntyre is a quartet omnibus]. Aside from the anthology [400 pages of fun authors to try--yay!], the novels are either book 1 in a series or stand-alones. There are many award-winning authors, including Kristine Smith and Rosemary Kirstein. One of the stand-alones is by M.C.A. Hogarth. Aside from all the other awesome, I'd have bought the bundle for the Hogarth alone; she's one of my favorite authors.

My hunky hubby departs for his spring training pilgrimage next week. Let's just say, that's my reading for that definitely sorted.

I enjoyed this analysis & conversations with authors. Y'all might, too.

obLMB: I can't help picturing how this kind of thing might've been going on on Barrayar all along, completely under most male radar. [Although now I'm picturing Professor Vorthys finding himself in the middle of a romance symposium to collect the Professora & liking it more than he expected; I'm also picturing Gregor & Laisa reading romance novels to each other, undoubtedly giggling over how the galactic romance writers get the Barrayaran alphas skewed. Plot bunnies, deployed!]
