The Best $25 Purchase Ever
Jun. 24th, 2009 01:20 pmA couple of years ago, I got tired of lugging clunky boxes around booksales and having them stolen. Since I'm no longer a bookdealer, I don't need the handtruck, but wanted something in-between. I saw someone at a booksale with what looked like a milkcrate on wheels with a retractable handle.
Finding one took some serious rooting-around online. Let's just say, never look for a crate with wheels under the word "crate." At best, you'll get lots of canine casas. We wound up getting one at Staples, because it was solid black. It may not have come with a lid, but at least I didn't cringe at being seen with it in public [Home Depot Hot Pink, I'm looking at you].
I've been using it ever since. In theory, it works like portion control; in practice, it holds an astonishing amount. If not 5-, I'm at least packing it into 4-space [weg]. The Professora & I went to the last sale down at the Georgia Archives [astonishingly nearby; I found a Heyer hardback--with Barbosa cover--for $1, FTW!]. I laughed at her multiple trips to her car with box after box; everything I wanted fit into the crate. [It's rated for 70+ pounds & staggered around a lot, but held up.]
Using it at library booksales, stuff is less likely to be stolen out of it, although it still does happen. Nowadays, I mostly use it for shipping runs from http://www.paperbackswap.com/ & returning stacks to the library.
