The Miranda James books are lots of fun; I've read the first several in that series. That author, Dean James, has lots of short series under several pseudonyms. I've read many, & enjoyed them all.
You might enjoy some of the Linda O. Johnston mysteries. The Kendra Ballantyne series is about a lawyer who becomes a pet-sitter. The animals feature prominently. Her other series is about a lady running an animal shelter, so you'd have a connection there, too. They're well done.
