2004 Newsletter
I didn't do one of these last year, but combined it with this year's update. I'll separate them out for the sake of brevity [an argument seldom used by me, so savor the novelty thereof ;)].
2004
In January we got our very first completely new car ever, a dark blue 2004 Corolla. We were 40; it was time [& just in time for GaFilk]. The highlight of February was ConDFW--getting to meet and hang out with online pals & Lois Bujold [a favorite author], room parties, a variety of food close by, Texas authors and musicians--cosy, rollicking fun!
While my delightful spouse was in Florida for spring training [baseball], I discovered the Liaden books; when he had been to 7 games, I had read 7 books. You know, all the filkers and musicians I hang out with, it’s a real musical education. When we went to the Renaissance Faire in April [2-4-1!] & I knew all the songs, he was impressed [always an appealing quality in a husband].
In May my mom got lost en route to a pharmacy she had used for over 30 years, which shook her up so much, she drastically curtailed driving. We went to Balticon, where I enjoyed music every day and room parties every night, with Lois Bujold, on-line pals, & Heather Alexander. The hotel was dubious & poky, but the people were great!
I stayed closer to home in June, working registration for Sci Fi Summer Con & hanging out with folks from the local science fiction club. We put on a cool party. The Emerald Rose [pagan celtic folk music] concert rocked! We spent July 4th with my parents getting rained off the deck by a torrential downpour, but still having lots of fun.
In September we went to the World Science Fiction Con in Boston. It was *heavily* over-programmed, but much fun & new friends were still had. Himself enjoyed lots of baseball [it helps when the team’s actually in town]. We went to Harvard Square & sightseeing with friends. During the music the final night, a man played “The City of New Orleans” [my mom’s favorite song] on a banjo [my grandma‘s favorite instrument]. It was like seeing through three sets of eyes, all of them misty.
I also went to FenCon, flying out with a couple of friends. It’s a typical irony that I’d fly so far to wind up hanging out with locals. The food was far away, but the con itself was awesome--music, authors, etc.
To celebrate the 17th anniversary of our first date, we I made a trip to Savannah for several days of shivering and sightseeing in October. The ghost tours especially were creepy fun. The cruise was a blatant rip-off, but food was varied and good.
My step-father broke his arm two days before Thanksgiving. Things were a bit subdued, but we all enjoyed being together.
This time my husband came to the December filk dinner with me [so if we broke down, at least it‘d be together]. Local filkers don’t get to see him so often, so they enjoyed each other. We also did our annual tour of loud houses. Since no one was up for cooking, we had Christmas dinner at a Chinese buffet, but it was still good & fun. My mom was out of the hospital in plenty of time to enjoy it.
