Just a couple of these things, & it pays for itself. For example, the Fiction River anthology alone [nearly 800 pages!] is 8.00 on Kindle. The Uncollected Anthology Year One [490 pages] is only available as a $24 paperback. Afaik, this is the only e-book edition. The Grayson trilogy is excellent, romance-with-woo-woo fun; the Rusch Diving series has great buzz. The Faerie Summer is a 20-book e-book set.

Throw in the others, & that's a lot at an excellent deal. Squee!

Political?

I don't really do politics. The usual line is, "Ze spouse speaks law, politics, baseball, and wrestling. I speak French, Spanish, science fiction, & fantasy. The difference is, my fantasy is better written than his, especially in an election year." [That was somehow much less funny lately.]

The closest I get to politics is two opinions:

1. Leave me alone.
2. GOOMU [Get Out Of My Uterus]. [Feel free to use; that's a good one.]

Howsomever, good is good, but great is better. Speaking of which, I was just listening to this this morning:

Talis is always delightful, but she's put some of her best stuff for free or name-your-own-price here:

I also enjoy the common sense of this one:

Several compilations of Andre Norton works are free or .99 over on Kindle right now, over on amazon.com. The collections include 5, 7, 12, 14, or 15 works in one, as well as several individual works.

note: I don't know if that works for other countries or not.

Every year on his blog, John Scalzi has a week of threads for holiday gift-giving. In his non-book thread, Elise Matthesen, the wonderfully creative jeweler who crafted the exquisite torque-of-many-nomination-pins that graces Lois McMaster Bujold on formal occasions, posted the following:

If you’re a Bujold fan, mention Winterfair when you make your order, and I will send you a free gift: a little planet pendant on sterling silver. (Lois saw them once and said, “Hey, those are like the planet pendants from my book!”)

For fans of Bujold or wonderful sparklies, it doesn't get much on-topic-er than that.

P. S. The main non-book gift thread is here: http://whatever.scalzi.com/2016/11/30/whatever-holiday-shopping-guide-2016-day-three-arts-crafts-music-and-more/ The other threads are on the other week-days of last week.

Subject: [LMB] Penric on Paper

I am pleased to report that Subterranean Press has made an offer to do a
print edition of the novella "Penric's Demon".

http://subterraneanpress.com/

Unlike larger publishers, they can do smaller, more quirky projects, and
seem a very good fit for this novella-length work.

The ink is not yet dry on the contract, so I can't give you publication
specifics for the good reason that they don't yet exist. But the
probabilities are release sometime in the later part of 2016, and a
modest hardcover run, with a limited number of signed copies.

So, all you people who asked in the comments for a paper edition, here
you go. Subterranean does some very pretty book design, so I expect it
will be worth the wait.

I do the catch-and-release-books thing. With me it's certain authors. If I find them for $1 or less, I'll get them, just to release them out into the world. Bujold, always, Robert M. Arthur, some Nortons, etc., depending on condition.

Back in January, I found out that one of our German filkers is a rabid Robert M. Arthur fan & didn't know about his short story collections, of which I just happened to have extra copies. One of the attendees at GaFilk is serving in Germany, so he was able to mail them for me from there, to great cross-global glee. I've since recommended the Amelia Peabody books to her; she's enjoyed the first one, & is continuing the series. Squee!

Just posted this to my blog --

I am pleased to report that a new Cordelia Vorkosigan novel has been
sold to Baen Books for publication, tentatively, in February of 2016.

The title is _Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen_.

It is not a war story. It is about grownups.

And that is probably all I ought to say right now in a venue read by the
spoiler-sensitive. It is, after all, a long haul till next February.

2016 will also mark the 30th anniversary of my first publication by
Baen, which ought to be good for a little PR fun.

Via the Bujold list; all I know is what's here:

Lady in Waiting by Rosemary Sutcliff

Handsome and gifted, Walter Raleigh was a star even in a court of brilliant
men ruled by one of the greatest monarchs of all time, Elizabeth I.

Raleigh held position and power, and was loved by the Queen, but his dream
was to conquer new lands for Elizabeth, to find El Dorado.

Bess Throckmorton was one of the Queen's Maids of Honour.

Shy and retiring, her dream was to capture the heart of the proud and
restless Raleigh, in whose life it seemed she would always come second.

But when Elizabeth dies and James I comes to power, Raleigh's fortunes take
a dramatic turn...

Once a beloved courtier, he becomes a disgraced prisoner.

The 5th Century BC.

The Greek city-states are engaged in perpetual war.

But one man towers above the chaos.

His name is Alkibiades.

He is at once a pirate, statesman and seducer whose adventures rival those of Odysseus himself.

Citizen of Athens, friend of Socrates, sailor, warrior and inveterate lover, Alkibiades flees persecution in his native city to join the Spartan cause.

However, his brilliant naval and diplomatic victories on their behalf do not save him from the consequences of impregnating the Spartan queen, and once more he takes up the outcast's mantle.

Rosemary Sutcliff's thrilling historical novel charters the life of this Greek warrior, from his military climax to his violent demise.
